The Metropolitan Cathedral, known also as the Catedral de Santiago, on the Plaza de Armas, has suffered much damage over the years from earthquakes. Rebuilt and remodeled in baroque and classical styles, the two towers were completed at the end of the 19th century. The interior is magnificent and the tomb of Chile's first cardinal, Jose María Caro, is here.
