| Llullaillaco (6,739 metres (22,110 ft)) is a stratovolcano at the border of Argentina (Salta Province) and Chile. It lies in the Puna de Atacama, a region of very high volcanic peaks on a high plateau within the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places in the world. Llullaillaco is the second highest active volcano in the world, surpassed only by Ojos del Salado. It is the fifth highest volcano in the world, and it is also the seventh highest mountain of the Western Hemisphere.
As on this day, this became the highest peak that we had viewed. The previous highest mountain we had viewed was Nev. Ausangate (6385m) in the Cordillera Vilcanota in Peru in Sept. 2003. We may have caught sight of Cerro Aconcagua from the 2 plane rides that landed in Santiago during this trip. However, that cannot be counted as it is not a positive identification. Later, Llullaillaco lost its preeminent status in our lives in October 2008 when we visited the Khumbu Valley in Nepal and caught sight of Mount Everest. |
