The term Gulf Coast refers to the southern coastline of the United States comprising of the coasts of the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. These coasts are anchored by the port cities of Houston, New Orleans, Mobile and Tampa. The coast is made up of many inlets, bays, lagoons and islands that sometimes form a protective barrier over the main coastline. The coast is also intersected by major rivers such as the Mississippi in New Orleans. The coast is vulnerable to natural disasters like hurricanes (like the catastrophic 2005 Hurricane Katrina) due to to the subtropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Link to Google Maps |
