A red brick, three storey building at Durbar Square, Kumari Ghar (House of the Living Goddess) is home to the Kumari, the girl who is selected to be the town's living goddess until she reaches puberty and reverts to being a normal mortal ! The Royal Kumari is selected from a particular caste of Newari gold and silversmiths and must meet 32 strict physical requirements. Once a suitable girl is chosen, she moves into Kumari Ghar with her family and makes only a half a dozen ceremonial forays into the outside world each year. During her time as goddess, she is supported by the temple income and on retirement she is paid a handsome dowry.
