| Entrance to Kathmandu's main Durbar Square, a complex of courtyards, palaces and temples that was once the seat of the Malla kings. The square is the traditional heart of the old town and Kathmandu's most spectacular legacy of the traditional Newari architecutre. It is not an enclosed space, the streets running through it are used by pedestrians and vehicles to get from one part of the city to another. Most of the square dates from the 17th and 18th century. The entire square was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Monument in 1979 |
