| The Bagmati is a holy river and like Varanasi on the Ganges, Pashupatinath is a popular place to be cremated. The burning ghats (Arya ghats) immediately in front of the temple are for royalty. Recently ten members of the royal family were cremated here after the infamous massacre of 2001 in which both King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya were gunned down by their son. The cremation ghats seen here are for the common people. |
