Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve: Barataria Preserve Visitor Center

Set on 8600 acres of coastal wetlands (a medley of swamps, freshwater marshes and hardwood forests). Jean Lafitte was a leader of smugglers who prowled these waters in the 1800s, who was initially a wanted man by the law. He eventually helped Andrew Jackson to help win the Battle of New Orleans and is hence a hero.

The first stop on our Bayou Byways tour was this location just south of New Orleans. We spent the time on one of the Bayou walking trails.
